align="left">
Hi there,

.

You may have seen or heard of an interview on Forbes.com by Mr. John Dobosz, senior editor of Forbes Newsletter, entitled “Green Energy Train Wreck.

The person interviewed was Mr. Josh Wolfe, principal, Lux Capital. The subject of the interview was the outlook for investors for the coming year or so in the area of green energy and new technologies. As the inventors and practicioners of Practical Greenology, and considering its title, it was important for us to follow up on this interview.

Train Wreck Montparnasse 1895

If you didn’t watch the interview but heard the title, you would have received an entirely incorrect idea of what it was all about. The viewpoint presented was to advise investors in the major stock markets, and the primary question was – what’s good for the investor in green energy and new technologies in the coming period? “Green Energy” in this context means major companies doing things like massive wind or solar parks, and the problems were not what you might expect. According to Mr. Wolfe, the primary barrier to companies going ahead with major projects in green energy will be the cost of capital, not the need or desire for or the benefit of more green energy.

What does that mean for us, the green home investors? Most likely, not much! Perhaps it will make our home-produced energy a little more valuable, since we will not have as much competition from the “big boys” (in other words, normal electricity bills may rise some). Also, since the hardware we use on a green homes basis is not a gigantic market, and the manufacturers for “our” equipment tend to be small- to medium-sized companies, I don’t think we will see any significant cost impact on our installations. On the other hand, there are bound to be continuing improvements in the technology, and that should mean capital cost savings and improved benefits for us and the “big boys”. Mr. Wolfe agrees with me on this: “Let’s always make the distinction that there’s a difference between the investors in technologies and the users of it. I think that the users are going to benefit tremendously from technological advances in the next few years and beyond.”

So, “green energy train wreck”? No, at least not from our point of view as consumers and micro-producers. Practical Greenology is still your biggest advantage!

But remember, “it ain’t easy bein’ green!” [thanks to Kermit the Frog!] (but it looks like it’s even more difficult driving a steam locomotive!)<img
