Hi there!

I was interested to read an article in the syndicated Yahoo! Green News rss feed today (http://green.yahoo.com/news/afp/20090311/sc_afp/environmentclimatewarmingcarbontax.html) about a carbon tax being “the only way to keep the planet cool.” Well, I was interested at the start, but the more I read the more upset I became.

  • First of all, I hate absolute statements. They are (almost) always bound to be wrong (almost fell into my own trap there – :-) ).
  • Secondly, even more than absolute statements, I hate the people who have virtually no knowledge in some area, e.g. scientists talking about politics, coming out with a (in this case, political) statement that is almost certain to be wrong (see part the first).

This kind of stuff gives me a wuzzy feeling in my stomach – you know, the way you feel just before you’re going to throw up?

How would Mr. (Dr.? Prof.?) Top Climate Scientist Hansen feel if I – an accomplished engineer, but in no way a scientist – came out with a pronouncement that all climate scientists practicing today have their data wrong? And proceeded to “prove” it using logic that can not be faulted without sounding like a silly donkey. I expect that he would not be very happy.

On the other hand, I suppose his job as director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies may depend upon him making headlines every now and then.

What do you think?

Ciao for now,

Jimmy Craig
